What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon browsers show next to your website in tabs, bookmarks and history. It is a tiny but powerful piece of brand identity: users find your tab faster, your site looks more professional, and search engines like Google now display favicons next to page titles in their results as well.
Which sizes do you need in 2026?
A modern favicon set consists of several files: a favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions for classic browser contexts, PNGs at 16 × 16 and 32 × 32 for tabs on high-resolution displays, an apple-touch-icon.png at 180 × 180 pixels for the iOS home screen, and 192 × 192 plus 512 × 512 pixel icons for Android and progressive web apps, wired up through the site.webmanifest file. Why does favicon.ico still matter?
Even in 2026, browsers, search engine crawlers and many tools automatically request /favicon.ico without any HTML reference at all. If the file is missing, you get 404 errors in your logs and in some contexts your icon simply stays blank. An ICO file with multiple embedded sizes therefore remains the robust baseline, complemented by PNGs and the web manifest for modern platforms.
